I noticed a pool of what looked like oil on the garage floor under my 02 plate 996 recently and fearing that it was the dreaded RMS failure took into to a local specialist.
I was told that it was in fact a leak from the gear box rather than the engine - so big sigh of relief - or so I thought! Apparently the seal between the gear box & the camshaft/drive shaft has failed, Porsche don't supply these and it requires a brand new gear box at a cost of £7,000! At that sort of cost I wonder whether I should just take the car apart bit by bit and sell it for spares! This can't be correct surely, I would welcome any advice. Cheers Sandman |

Welcome to the forum Sandman. That sounds weird to me. There surely must be an oil seal for sale from Porsche main dealer. Mines not a 996, but my drive shaft oil seal went, and bought one for a few quid.
Have you tried calling a main dealer to confirm what you've been told? |
