Its a turbo spec but I'm not sure if its oem or not. Pretty sure it isn't fibreglass though as its not light!

Hello all,

I am selling the wheels from my 3.0 SC track car. Fronts are 7.5x17 et 23 with N rated conti's, rears are 9x17 et 15 with budgets, all wheels are straight and scratch free. Black with red Porsche detail.

Fronts are 8x18 ET52
Rears are 9.5x18 ET47

All four are in good straight condition but the faces have some minor kerbing, paint flake etc. They could do with a refurb. No tyres.

£400 collected from Devon or I can send them for an additional £40.

Hello all as a complete 911 newbie I am just after a bit of advice on improving the handling of my 3.0 litre sc. The problem is the massive understeer I am getting while cornering.

Is this just part and parcel of 911 ownership or can I minimise it somehow?

Thanks in advance

Jay.
Quote: Pete at Apr 15, 2009 8:10:44 pm
Then when all of this is done you can think about your front and rear roll bars.  Do you know what size you are running?

Thanks for the welcome and the advice Pete! I have read about corner weighting before not sure who to go to in the South west though. As far as the roll bars go not sure what its running to be honest.

I am sure it is just a set up issue with mine I would love to get it corrected though as understeer is a nightmare. I have some track time booked at Castle combe a week on Saturday shame it wont be sorted before then!
Ideal I am sure it has the potential to be a very compotent car! I will get it on the ramp tomorrow and have a look at the roll bars.  :agree:
I totally forgot mate I am back at work tomorrow so I will do it then.
Turns out the handling isn't as bad as I had first thought took the 911 to Castle combe yesterday and found it more than competant even against the awd stuff!
No idea on my lap times to be honest they could be hours but it was so much fun! The 911 is a real challenge to drive fast but so rewarding! I do have a few pictures and video I will get them uploaded asap. I have a nice clip of me spinning it at Quarry on my last lap!
Checked my anti roll bars today 20mm front 20mm rears

M3 Evolution

318is and a classic Mini (bonnet bra was on it when I got it, gone now!)

Pete, you do realise that I have two different e36 coupes?? The M3 goes very well indeed, its rapid but comfortable.

Steve, thanks mate, Dakar has always been my favourite colour on an M3. E36's are underrated in my opinion, they are great all rounders.

I am thinking about getting some new wheels for the 911 prefer bbs style but cant find any that fit!

As my car is an 81 but running 89 wheels it has spacers all round. The wheels are 7.5x17 et23 front and 9x17 et15 rears. All the 911 wheels I look at have massive offsets like et47???

What do you suggest I do to find after market wheels?

Cheers all.
The LM's with a gold centre look awesome couldn't see any prices though. What offset should I look at getting? Standard 911 or my ultra low offset?
Nice one Pete I will have a look into it
Thanks for the offer mate, ideally looking for something a little bigger.

Good luck with the sale though.

Jay.
Well after some searching I have narrowed it down to these two sets, What do you think??

Both sets are 18's and cost about the same. Just can't make my mind up.

In topic "Carrera 3.2 upgrade"
Hello all,

I am looking at upgrading the front brakes on my 85 Carrera 3.2. I have a set of rear calipers from a 996 (GT3 I think) will these fit with my existing discs with caliper adaptor mounts and braided lines?

I have read several conflicting opinions on the net so thought I'd ask here first!

Thanks,

Jay.
Hello Pete,

I've been out of the Porsche circle for a while. Sold my old SC last year and after a string on M3's I have returned!

I have seen various calipers on the old 911's, I just wondered if there were any 'off the shelf' brackets available for my calipers, Design911 only seem to have the 'big red' fronts listed.
Part No. from my calipers is 996 352 425 and 996 352 426
They are definately out there but not sure where! I think I am putting the brake upgrade on the back burner for the minute while I sort out a coil over conversion.
That's what I am looking in to at the minute, from Rebel Racing Products

In topic "JK's Track ready 3.0 SC"
Hello everyone just joined so thought I best post up a few pictures of my 911 before I start pestering you all with questions!

Not too sure on the performance figures as I am yet to get it on a dyno I do know its highly entertaining to drive though! The noise alone makes it worth it.

The current spec.....

3.0 litre flat six
K&N panel filter
964 kit
Porsche cup alloys
Cup mirrors
Goodridge brake hoses
Corbeau sprint seats
Sparco full roll cage with door bars
Sparco 4pt harness's
Sparco suede steering wheel
Sparco passenger foot rest
Battery kill switch
fully striped inside
Cropped/lightened wiring loom
Perspex side windows and quarter lights
Fire extinguisher
Sparco bonnet and boot pins
Suede dash
Light weight wheel nuts
Only engine mod I am aware of is the K&N filter. Given the weight it does go really well highly entertaining actually!

Not too sure where to go performance wise I don't have bags of cash to spend on it at the minute but I would like to tune it at some point. Not sure where to start though so any pointers much appreciated! I was watching a 3.3 turbo engine on ebay a while ago if only funds would allow!!
Did the 1981 european SC not make 204bhp??

I think I am going to stick with naturally aspirated as I love how responsive it is in the Porsche. I have a few bits to tidy up before the engine mods begin so this should give me time to assess my funds and make a plan.
Painted my roll cage white today, I think it looks so much better now!

As much as I like the Fuchs I am really after a set of BBS Le Mans!

Pete, the cage was already in the car when I got it, I just took it out and painted it white. Its a sparco item and the fit is pretty flawless. Not sure how much the cage weighs, but the car with me and quarter tank of fuel is 1120kg.
I am a bit of a revamp so I am going for a 964 rear end, electric spoiler and all. I also want lower suspension and some new wheels!
Got my wheels today, well pleased with them. Can't wait until the weekend now to get them bolted on.

8x17 fronts and 9.5x17 rears
Rears have 265/40/17 Toyo proxes t1 and fronts have 235/45/17 Fulda Y3000.

I am currently running 9" rears with 255's so I am hoping if I run 245's there will be plenty of room under there!
I am in contact with an American company at the minute trying to finalise the parts for the coilover conversion so hopefully I will get that sorted some and get the car a bit closer to the floor!!

I also really want to get the inside tidied up and painted white, 964 electric rear spoiler and the manual window conversion so I have plenty to be going on with!
Got a few bits back from the bodyshop today, I was never keen on the black light surrounds or brake vents so I am pleased with them in white!

I thought I better trial fit my wheels too, I want some lower profile tyres though, not enjoying the 4x4 look!

I want to drop it a lot to be honest! I think the front is down as far as it will go, don't know about the rear.

I have been in touch with a guy in America about a coilover conversion kit, just waiting for him to get back to me with definate prices.
Got some new tyres today so got my wheels on

Took all the decals off the sill trim too..

Well after reading several AP car design threads and not enjoying the rust and paint on my 911 I decided today instead of renewing the tax I would go for a complete rebuild!

This isn't your usual send it to the shop with a blank cheque build, I am far from wealthy so I will be undertaking as much work as possible. I am stripping the shell ready to be sand blasted and primed, I will then be in a position to see whats what and carry out any necessary repairs before it heads to the paint shop. Then it will come back to mine to be put back together.

I will also be upgrading to coilover suspension amongst other bits and pieces!

Spent 3 hours on it today......

Comments and suggestions welcome!
Cheers Pete. It is going to be a bit of both really, restore anything that isn't right and modify anything I can afford to! I think I am going to go for an alloy fuel tank with wing filler delete. I will definatly be strenghtening the rear towers and may well go for the weld in brace.

Not sure if the engine will be modified yet, depends on the work and cost involved in the shell really.

I have been taking loads of photos and bagging/labelling/boxing all the bits removed. Also been tagging the wiring loom as I am going to make a new one with just the essentials on it, oh also going to fit a modern fuse box.

I will keep the pictures coming and the thread updated for anyone interested!

Jay.
Weather was pretty good today so had another few hours on it today, all interior and glass out, rear end stripped and some of the under bonnet wiring.......

Spare room is starting to look like my garage!
Thanks, it does seem to be coming on at a steady pace!

Pete I will be doing all the welding at home and work. I am hoping I will be doing everything other than blasting and paint, should keep the cost down considerably.

Mark I never really noticed but yes the box looks massive!! It has a large hole in aswell so will definately be upgrading that when the time comes. The rear isn't fibreglass unfortunately, It weighs an absolute ton. I am changing the rear to 964 with electric spoiler.

Engine and box comes out Saturday if all goes to plan!
Took the 911 to work this morning to continue the strip down....

I found plenty to keep me busy....

Not much left to remove....

This seems to be an ever increasing sight....  :)

Car is back at mine now to have the suspension, wiring loom, gauges and the other few bits removed then its off to the blasters!
Well progress has been slow lately, work and other commitments have kept me away from the garage! It seems the longer I am without the 911 the more I want to break it for bits to part fund a 964!

Anybody want some 911 parts??
Well after deciding to keep the 911 I have started work on it again! Bit of a dissapointing start really. For those that don't know my car was originally put together by 911 & Porsche world so I presumed it would have been a no expense spared project, turns out its a complete bodge!

I dug out one of the magazines it featured in and in thier own words " Experience has shown us that its futile to try and repair B pillars so we ordered two new repair panels"

After stripping the car I noticed a crack in the paint on the N/S B pillar so armed only with a screw driver this is what I achieved/found!!!

There is no way on earth those B pillars are 6 years old, unless the previous owner parked it under the sea!

I just got a pair of pattern outer sills from Euro car parts for £84 so I will be ringing them in the morning for a pair of B pillars!!
Yes pretty shoddy really!

I had a fair few hours on the Porsche again today, cut off the o/s outer sill, cleaned off all the dirt and surface rust from under the arches and removed the oil cooler pipes and tank.

Found plenty of smaller repairs to do behind the outer panels

Started to remove the dreaded sound proofing inside

I haven't weighed this lot yet, I will wait until all the sound proofing is off!!

Haha yes the Magners was to keep the helpers onboard!

I weighed all the sound proofing, rust and dirt today, 9.4kg!!

Also found some more rust! N/s inner rear quarter had been bodged up with fibreglass and the o/s b pillar is the original. I got the sound proofing off and started to clean up the floor pans with solvent, not a fun job!

Still positive though, enjoying the project and even got a bit of welding done today.

Tried some spare Brembo's on the front, no good though so I will have to save for some Boxster fronts I think..

Tempting but if I do an engine swap it will be a 3.3 turbo!
Sorry mate, not a lot going on with the 911 at the minute, hopefully get some more welding and prep done over the next month or so. Got a chap from a local bodyshop coming to have a look at it next week, give me some idea of cost for the body/paint work.

I will get some updates and pictures up as soon as I have some!  :)
I ordered all my repair panels from Porscheshop.co.uk today so I should have some updates over the next few weeks.

I bought a 1997 M3 Evo a few weeks ago to keep me amused while the Porsche is being restored but I am really missing the 911 now so want to crack on with it!
To be honest I am more of a BMW fan that has defected to the aircooled side!

Panels are all here now, should see some more progress this weekend...

Bit of an update....

The 911 is now on its wheels again so I can move it in and out the garage, I started welding things up today, got the engine bay sorted.

Should be able to get on with the rest in the evenings this week, fingers crossed!

Degreased and steam cleaned the engine at work yesterday, came up quite well.

All the welding will be done, new panels in place. It will need prep, prime, paint and fit up. Needs a pair of front seats, wiper motor doesn't work and the oil pipe from the tank to engine is split.
Well the 911 has been at work for a few weeks now so the welding is nearly done....

Thanks Pete, the drivers side is now done, just need the same doing on the passenger side and a bit of tidying up at the front then its paint, engine in, fit up, coilovers etc etc!

What a coincidence, I had the very same issue last Sunday. Called the Rac and they managed to fix it. Must be a resonable common failure.
They didn't actually do it at the roadside, I managed to cable tie the throttle open at 3000 rpm and limp it home. They repaired it on my drive the next day! Haven't managed to get the correct linkage yet but the repair is still going strong.
In topic "My 3.0 isn't quick enough!"
Well after 6 months of 911 ownership the 3.0 is starting to feel slow (ish) so I am looking into options for more power. I have been looking at a few 3.3 turbo engines for around the 4.5k mark, which with a bit of saving is just about doable.

Just want some advice really, is the turbo the best way to go? What about a mildly tuned 3.2? Or a 3.6? Where is the best place to source these engines and how much am I looking at to buy one?

Cheers all.

Jay.
Not too sure how much power I want really, 250-300bhp would be nice. Budget is a big question mark, I'm not your usual 911 owner, I have a reasonable income and don't have a huge amount of disposable income!

I will be doing all the work myself as I am a mechanic so that should keep the cost down. I am hopeing the sale of my engine will help out considerably.

Will my 915 box bolt up to a 3.2? What kind of power could I squeeze out of one of them?

Car is now only used at the weekend if its dry and the occasional track day so I want usable power.
Cheers pete, I have seen a 3.2 on ebay for £2750 buy it now but £2250 starting bid so your estimate sounds about right. Not sure how much I might get for my 3.0 though??

Tuned 3.2 is a viable option then.
Pete that engine is awesome!! I am pretty sure that would have cost more to build than my 911 was to buy!

Did think about a later 3.6 but I cant find any for sale and I read on 911uk that when they fail they are fit for the bin not a rebuild.

The 3.2 on ebay for £2750 comes with everything. Any idea how much my lump is worth? Oh and do you have any videos of yours in action Pete?
In topic "Oil warning light"
The oil warning light comes on intermittently on my 85 Carrera 3.2, at idle and whilst driving. The oil pressure is good, Approx. 1 bar per 1000rpm and the level is fine. Faulty sender maybe? Anyone had a similar issue?  :)
Thanks mate. Am I right in thinking it's the sensor under the inlet manifold on the MAF side? The red sensor?
I got an OEM one from Design911 for £30 delivered. It took about 20 minutes to change and the old one was weeping oil. No more flashing warning light!

I am pretty sure the front is already on the stops and I don't know how to go about doing the rear, what are my options, can I change the front set up, or the front and rear?

Any help/suggestions appreciated (unless you say leave it as it is!!)

Cheers,

Jay.
Thanks Pete, I would actually like the front down a bit as well. I have been looking into options for removing the whole torsion bar set up front and rear and replacing it with coilovers. As I am no Porsche expert its difficult finding out exactly what I need and what the costs involved might be??
Do you have any more pictures or info you can share with me about the conversion please Pete? Also a ball park figure for the parts, bearing in mind I am after basic height adjustale sus, not high end RSR spec kit!

Looks right at home on the track I reckon.

It held its own no problem. I had a dabble with a couple of scoobys on my last few laps and although they had the legs on the straight the 911 had the upper hand in the corners.

I was well impressed to be honest its a hand full to drive fast but when I get it right it really goes! I did 330 miles to a tank which included the track time and it never missed a beat. Brakes were well upto the job aswell not even a sign of fade!

As per title really, anyone using HID headlights? I am getting a bit annoyed with the dismal yellowish headlights!

Any advice/experience etc?

Thanks all.
Thanks for that Pete, so would you advise against HID then? I have found a 911 kit on the net for £69.99, which is about as much as I want to spend right at the minute. I would love to do the full LED upgrade you mentioned but don't really have the time.

I am going to Ireland next month so would love to be able to see where I a going!
After a quick search on "another" site I have found a few people using them on early 911 and 964. I am going to order a set tomorrow so I will keep you updated and get some pictures whilst I am fitting the kit.

Cheers Pete.
Finally got my Hid kit sorted, fitted it myself but over looked a couple of same colour side light wires and an incorrectly rated fuse, switched the kit one, melted the side light wiring loom! £230 auto electrition bill later lesson learned! Thats a grand total of £310 for my Hids.

Moral of the story, be very careful working with old/non original wiring and always make sure the correct ampage fuse is fitted!

Despite the obvious headache they were worth it, so much better than the originals. I can actually drive at a decent pace after dark now!  :D
I will get some pictures up over the weekend Pete.

The kit was a generic H4 one from ebay, poorly written instructions but well made and solid looking parts. Yes mate, £80 delivered! Some of the kits listed as a direct fit for 911's were upto 3 times the cost and exactly the same!
Better late than never!! This is the only picture I have after the HID kit was fitted.

I will get some better pictures up tomorrow.

I really can't reccomend HID's enough, the difference is unreal, late night B road driving is now something I look forward to rather than avoid! The light is bright and clean, far superior to the yellowy candle like glow they replaced.
Pete, I will get some more pictures of the install up at the weekend.

The light beam is perfectly focused and where is should be, and there is no delay between hi/low beam, the switch is instant.
Only other picture I have at the minute, its hard to get the idea from a picture but they are good. I will get a night video up at the weekend if I remember!

I think the ebay seller was cms_sales
One thing worth mentioning Pete, you have to cut a hole in the back of the headlight bowl as the bulb kit needs a bit more depth. I am welding on an additional cup to the back of the bowl to stop all the unwated road dirt getting into the light.

Sorry I didn't mention that before, completly slipped my mind.
I don't have any pictures of the bowl mod as mine just has a hole in the back at the moment, I will get some pictures of the ballast and wiring up soon though.

Hello all, I like the whole track look of my car and all but not having windows that go down is a pain in the backside sometimes! I want to revert to standard glass in place of the perspex but don't want to add too much weight.

Did any early 911 have manual windows that would fit in my SC?

Thanks in advance!
I currently have racing perspex type front and rear quarter windows, drivers side has a vent but Its annoying. I would like to just revert to manual winders and standard glass.

Would should I be looking, I can't find any anywhere! I am hoping the sale of my perspex windows will in part fund the glass and winders!
I didn't even think to look inside the doors.

Cheers Pete, that gives me plenty to be going on with!
Well I had a look in the doors today but no luck, the regulators/motors are gone! I also got in touch with Douglas valley breakers who informed me that manual windows are like hens teeth so not much chance of finding any at a reasonable price!

Looks like I will have to revert to electric windows as I definately want windows that open now.
Well I am about to take the 911 off the road for a few months for an over haul so I have a while to keep searching.

There are plenty of jobs to keep me occupied until then though!
Thanks very much Pete, I pm'd toto and it looks like I have some bits and pieces sorted!

My door cards look like that if you want to take a tamplate?
As requested by Pete, pics of mine, inside and out....

I am not sure what the main material is, didn't look like fibre board though, wrapped in vinyl and stappled all round. Red tag is attached with a 10mm bolt to original door pull.
Doesn't bother me, they were on there when I got it. I didn't say they were genuine!  :)
No worries mate.

Hu have you got any pictures of that material? I have just been looking at carbon sheet to make my new cards but its a little more than I wanted to spend.
Did anyone find a cost effective solution to this? I need a set.
I'm running out of time with regards to making my own. I may just order the RS America ones posted above

I would be there if I had a 911 to go in!

I've got a Cargraphic box and pipe on mine, looks very well made and sounds awesome at full chat.

As for Fabspeed, I recently bought their Cup air box,  it was the cheapest piece of tat I have ever had the misfortune of encountering. It was promptly returned.
I've gone back to a drilled stock air box. Plenty of noise from the stainless exhaust though!

I would be if I lived in a more central location, being in South Devon I doubt it will be anywhere near me!
200 Miles is easy, I did a 1000 mile round trip to Northern Ireland in my track stripped 911 last September!!

I'm with Hagerty, I'm 29 and paying £430 fully comp, 3000 miles, agreed value and free UK breakdown cover.

Big saving on the £1500 I was paying!!  :o
